Tasmanian owned and operated.

The Seafood Gateway’s story dates back to 1991 when the Bartels family business was started on the same family-owned land that we still operate on today – with a little difference.

Initially, our idea was to export abalone. As we got to know our customers, we realised that Southern Rock Lobster was a better product to specialise in for our business.

The Seafood Gateway has grown in line with the demand of our customers and always with the health and quality of our fish and environment at the forefront.

Meet some of the team.

Stephen Bartels
Managing Director

An upholder of the expression, “Work hard, play hard”, Stephen is across all facets of the business – and has been since 1991 when he started the company from scratch. When not rolling up his sleeves for The Seafood Gateway, you can find Stephen outside fishing, shooting and playing with heavy machinery like excavators, dozers,
tractors, and sawmills.
Sophie Bartels
Second in Charge

Stephen’s daughter, Sophie, has been in the business since 2021 and is learning the ropes of The Seafood Gateway, wearing all hats like office manager, finance manager, packaging controller and delivery driver. No day is ever the same – but for Sophie, this is just perfect because “Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day!”.
